This week on Edelman Editions Stefan Stern, Director of Strategy and Allyson Stewart-Allen, Head of International Marketing Partners and author of the best-selling book, Working with Americans discuss the hurdles that companies may meet whilst marketing a brand in the UK & USA.

Following the success of the British boy-band One Direction in the USA last week, Allyson explains what has made them more successful than other British bands state-side and how brands must recognise what works in the UK, may not work in the USA and vice versa.

If you would like to know how we can help you in engaging international markets, then please get in touch with our Consumer department, who will be more than happy to discuss this topic further.

Public Engagement is a response to the reality that the world is changing. The old architecture (top down, controlling and controlled) is being replaced by a new ecology – more democratic, more chaotic – where news and views travel at greater speed than ever before, across and between a multitude of stakeholders. The story is not one of technology but of the behavioural change that the technology has driven. As a result, the landscape of media and communications is shifting rapidly.

The third volume of Edelman’s annual publication, Public Engagement: Survive and Thrive in a Bigger Society, is a collection of thought pieces written by the UK team in which we continue to explore the shifting media, thought and working landscapes that we inhabit, as well as the increasingly complex relationship between businesses, brands, government, the media and society.

With the Big Society under increasing scrutiny, the articles in this volume re-imagine the role of our institutions in a changing world. They consider the behaviours that we – and others – need to adopt to be able to adapt, communicate and advance: to survive and thrive. Some of our behaviours are already appropriate; others less so.

PR is changing. Driven at pace by the democratizing power of digital and the continued shift from a shareholder to a stakeholder society, we are witnessing the emergence of a new model of Public Engagement. Networks have replaced channels; influence has supplanted audience; shared interests are moving us beyond dogma; and multilateral connection is the new dialogue. We are faced daily with a chaos of news and views. The golden age of broadcast is finally over.

This second volume of Edelman’s annual publication, Public Engagement in the Conversation Age, is a collection of thought pieces written by the UK team about the communications challenges facing brands, corporate, politics and NGOs – as well as our own industry, as we evolve from Public Relations to Public Engagement.
